Multi-talented New Castle woman has started an animal-drawing business

NEW CASTLE, Colorado - Ann Louise Ramsey of New Castle understands the way many people feel about their beloved pets. A loving pet owner herself, a poet, photographer, author and artist, she began drawing people’s pets in the mid-1990s, which evolved into a business called "Ann's Animal Artistry."

Eight years ago, she began drawing her cocker spaniel, "Honey," along with her Australian shepherd, "Honesty," and two cats for illustrations in a self-published poetry book called "Love, God and You."

"I do a lot of poetry, and I wanted to illustrate it," Ramsey said. "Pets were the best expression of unconditional love that I knew."

Since then she has been commissioned by others to draw their pets, which she does for $500 per drawing.

"I do it for fun, but it’s so labor intensive," Ramsey said. "It takes about 25 hours per drawing as they're very detailed."

Ramsey works off a photograph — either one that’s provided or a photo she takes herself.

"I like to have a good picture of their eyes," she said. "It makes it easier to see their spirit."

The pencil drawings are typically done on 9-by-12-inch heavyweight watercolor paper and come double-matted in a 16-by-20-inch mat ready to frame.

But drawing isn't Ramsey's only creative endeavor. Among them is also some book writing.

It's not unusual for Ann Ramsey to have a drawing pencil in her hand or her dog
Honey on her lap.

In 2006, Ramsey self-published a book called "Me, the Tree"— a children’s book about a blue-eyed pine cone that is determined to become a tall tree. The book received an award in 2007 from the Colorado Independent Publishers Association.

Her most recent book, "Just Be You," is a children’s picture book that illustrates Honey's journey to self-discovery.

"The books are about honoring and loving yourself," Ramsey said. "I like to teach kids about self-esteem."

Ramsey travels throughout the state and goes into schools to read her books and share her poetry and pictures.

The 57-year-old was born in Des Moines, Iowa, grew up in Sacramento, Calif., and has lived in the New Castle area since 1985. She currently lives up East Divide Creek and has for the past 13 years.

"I like little towns," she admitted.

Longtime residents may remember Ramsey as the fiddle player with Prairie Moon, a country music group she was in with her ex-husband that played locally in the valley back in the 1980s and ’90s.

Right now, Ramsey spends much of her time marketing her books, which are available in Mary's Wondrous Things in Rifle, The County Florist in Silt and Summit Canyon Coffee Shop, Book Train and Through the Looking Glass in Glenwood Springs.

Those interested in having an original drawing of their pet can contact Ramsey at 618-1748 or visit her website at www.annsanimalartistry.com. For copies of her books, visit www.methetree.com.

COLORADO AUTHOR, ANN LOUISE RAMSEY, DEBUTS NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK IN DURANGO!

Just Be You (2008)
Honey is a Cocker Spaniel who thinks she's a duck…because that’s what she's been told by the "others"…who just happen to be ducks! But secretly, Honey asks, "Who can I tell that I am not what you see?" and the mirror replies, "You can tell me!" Share Honey's delightful journey of self-discovery in Ann Louise Ramsey's magical children's picture book Just Be You.

Bursting with joy and guaranteed to bring a smile to young and old alike, Just Be You reminds us of the importance of loving and honoring ourselves.

And, don’t miss this 2007 winner….Me, the Tree
Struggling to know its true self, one lone pine cone, in a forest of many, searches for an open meadow "where no tree lived before" in order to become the magnificent pine tree that lives within. Through "patient believing" this tiny pine cone fulfills its destiny as a tree and ultimately falls in love with all of life in Ann Louise Ramsey’s children’s picture book Me, the Tree. Follow the birth of a pine tree in this poetic parable about self-realization as this little pine cone with deep blue eyes embarks on a fanciful journey from seedling to adulthood.

This insightful tale of self-motivation and belief in oneself comes to life through enchanting images that capture nature's beauty and gentle simplicity. Inspiring and uplifting, Me, the Tree connects readers with life itself through validation of our own individuality and serves to remind us of the divinity that lives within us all.

Winner of a 2007 EVVY Book Award (Colorado Independent Publishers Association), Ann's first book, Me, the Tree, has planted the seed of what promises to grow into a very tall tree for this innovative author/illustrator from Colorado.
